“The story of a musical cricket and his friends, a mouse and a cat of real character, who took up their abode in a Times Square newsstand . . . Most appealing whimsy with beautiful illustrations by Garth Williams.” ―School Library Journal, Starred Review“Delightful reading for the whole family.” ―The Horn Book Magazine“This is absolutely grand fun for anyone, a nine to ninety book with the most enchanting portraits by Garth Williams.” ―The New York Herald TribuneGeorge Selden (1929-1989) was the author of A Cricket in Times Square, winner of the 1961 Newbery Honor and a timeless children's classic. The popular Cricket series grew to seven titles, including Tucker's Countryside and The Old Meadow. In 1973, The Cricket in Times Square was made into an animated film. Selden lived in New York City until his death in December 1989. He enjoyed music, archaeology, and J.R.R. Tolkien. Garth Williams illustrated all seven of the Chester Cricket books and many other distinguished works, including Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, and the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Tucker is a streetwise city mouse. He thought he'd seen it all. But he's never met a cricket before, which really isn't surprising, because, along with his friend Harry Cat, Tucker lives in the very heart of New York City―the Times Square subway station. Chester Cricket never intended to leave his Connecticut meadow. He'd be there still if he hadn't followed the entrancing aroma of liverwurst right into someone's picnic basket. Now, like any tourist in the city, he wants to look around. And he could not have found two better guides―and friends―than Tucker and Harry. The trio have many adventures―from taking in the sights and sounds of Broadway to escaping a smoky fire.

Chester makes a third friend, too. It is a boy, Mario, who rescues Chester from a dusty corner of the subway station and brings him to live in the safety of his parents' newsstand. He hopes at first to keep Chester as a pet, but Mario soon understands that the cricket is more than that. Because Chester has a hidden talent and no one―not even Chester himself―realizes that the little country cricket may just be able to teach even the toughest New Yorkers a thing or two.

The Cricket in Times Square is a 1961 Newbery Honor Book.

A Childhood Favorite I first read this book back in elementary school in the late 1960's. It wasn't a required book to read, I just chose it because I guess at that age I was intrigued.Because this was during the day and age pre-video games, a great book was an important find during that time. The Cricket in Times Square was one of those books.I disappeared into it and loved being in the subway, visiting the newsstand and almost smelling the newspapers, and taking a trip to mysterious Chinatown. Even after allthese years I remember this book fondly and I was actually looking to see if it was in EBook form because I thought it would be great to read again. Unfortunately it isn't yet. This book is a great book for boy or girl to read and I hope they enjoy it today as I did back when I was a kid. This book and the Men of Iron by Howard Pyle were my two elementary school favorites.Good Classic Story I never read the Cricket in Times Square when I was a kid, but I have heard of it. My children and I had to read this book for our book club. I was really glad we needed to read it since it was a classic story that I hadn't read. We first listened to the audiobook then we read the book. My children really enjoyed the story about 3 unlikely friends (a cricket, a rat, and a cat), and it was a very quick read. My children even created a cardboard pagoda with a bell and we made a solar cricket after we read the book.Great little paperback! So nice to hold a paperback in hand while reading this old classic to the kids at bedtime. Wonderful story, beautifully written. Chirp, chirp!
