Praise for A Place for Us:“Absolutely gorgeous...Mirza writes about family life with the wisdom, insight and patience you would expect from a mature novelist adding a final masterpiece to her canon, but this is, fortunately, just the start of an extraordinary career…. Has a household ever been cradled in such tender attention as this novel provides?... As Marilynne Robinson has done with Protestants and Alice McDermott has done with Catholics, Mirza finds in the intensity of a faithful Muslim family a universal language of love and anguish that speaks to us all... In prose of quiet beauty and measured restraint, Mirza traces those twined strands of yearning and sorrow that faith involves. She writes with a mercy that encompasses all things.... Each time I stole away into this novel, it felt like a privilege to dwell among these people, to fall back under the gentle light of Mirza’s words."— Ron Charles, Washington Post“Ambitious… a family epic that is textured and keenly felt… Mirza draws Amar’s lifelong struggle with the concept of unconditional devotion so poignantly that readers will find it exceedingly relatable. But so too is the mysterious whisper in his ear urging him always to return, no matter how far he strays, back home.”— New York Times Book Review“The thinking person’s summer read, a rich and layered tale about family and assimilation.” — Entertainment Weekly "[An] impassioned debut novel… Mirza is attuned to the subtle ways in which siblings and parents compete for one another's affection. A ruminative final section, in which the father addresses his wayward son, is a moving coda."— The New Yorker"The book dives into the lives of a Muslim-American family, opening on the eve of the eldest daughter's marriage, and examines the intricacies of a family straddling two very different cultures."— Vanity Fair“A Place for Us is a stunning novel about love, compassion, cruelty and forgiveness — the very things that make families what they are…[Mirza’s] writing is gorgeous, unadorned but beautiful… a miracle of a book. A Place for Us is a major accomplishment, a work of real beauty and fierce originality.”— Michael Schaub, NPR.org“In polished prose that zeroes in on domestic detail and, at its loveliest, recalls Jhumpa Lahiri, Mirza delivers a portrait of a family straining to hold its center amid rebellions both quiet and explosive.”— TIME“A rich portrait of a fractured Muslim family…With unwavering compassion, this beautiful heartbreaker unravels the mystery of who may be to blame for Amar’s estrangement.”  —People"Magical." — ELLE“This is a richly detailed, immersive saga that hooks you from the jump and keeps you absorbed even as you spend decades with its characters. A Place for Us is a tender examination of identity and familial roles, of faith, and of what it means to be home.” — Marie Claire “An affecting, authentic and artful debut by Fatima Farheen Mirza… Mirza's writing is poignantly beautiful…By the end of the novel, readers may wish that some characters had spoken up at critical junctures and that other characters had swallowed the words that irreparably altered the course of events. That we become so invested is a testament to Mirza's talent.”— Associated Press"A stunner, worthy of a place among the finest books ever written about an American family."— Minneapolis Star Tribune"If you crave a family epic, read A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza....In this stunning, gorgeous novel, Mirza looks at the crucial events in an Indian-American Muslim family from many perspectives."— Refinery29“One of the biggest books of the summer.”— Bustle“Fatima Farheen Mirza's A Place for Us is everything I love about family sagas. It traverses time and place, explores the conflicts between a parent's expectation and a child's desires, and, most importantly, introduces us to fully imagined, flawed characters whose relationships are deep, entangled, and rich in love. The story — which centers on an American Muslim family navigating the tension between tradition and autonomy — is told in fragments, jumping from one character to another, slowly adding layers to scenes by revisiting interactions from multiple perspectives. And Mirza renders this family with a gentle hand, lovingly, so that each character will make their way into your heart.”— Buzzfeed"A brilliant debut from Fatima Farheen Mirza... this is a story about hope, and about the ways in which, if we open ourselves up to forgive the flaws in those we love, we can better move forward toward a brighter future."— Nylon“A complex narrative that dives into the fractured relationships that make up an Indian family as they gather for a wedding.”— PopSugar“Beautiful.” —Daily Beast"Highly anticipated."— Parade“Few novels so elegantly capture the complicated cultural dynamics of a modern American family quite like A Place for Us....Told from multiple perspectives, the story offers a nuanced look at what it's like to feel caught between two cultures, struggling to honor where you come from while attempting to fit in where you are. A devastating and deeply moving book.”— Shondaland"This affecting debut follows an Indian-American Muslim family as they assimilate into U.S. culture... Mirza’s expansive novel tackles everything from 9-11 to addiction, each moment offering a sliver of explanation as to how a family can become so fractured. Mirza writes about her characters with an incredible amount of tenderness, keeping readers invested."— Village Voice"A Place for Us resonates at the crossroads of culture, character, storytelling and poignancy."— BookPage"A hauntingly beautiful and poignant story of identity, belonging and perception. This first novel from Sarah Jessica Parker's new imprint, SJP for Hogarth, is as timely as it is stunning, and is the perfect launch for an imprint designed to celebrate literary fiction titles that will resonate with all readers, regardless of race, gender or experience."— Bookreporter“Fatima Farheen Mirza’s story brilliantly displays a path to mold old traditions with the new to examine love and identity.”— The Margins“Extraordinary in its depth and diligence... Mirza adeptly revisits painful dilemmas from each narrator’s perspective, revealing jolting secrets. Each complex, surprising character struggles with faith, responsibility, racism, fear, longing, and jealousy, while Mirza conveys with graceful specificity the rhythms of Muslim life, from prayer to wearing hijab, gender etiquette, food, holidays, and values, all of which illuminate universal quandaries about family, self, culture, beliefs, and generational change.” — Booklist"A California-based Indian Muslim family celebrates the wedding of daughter Hadia, marrying for love. Present is her estranged brother Amar, who hasn't easily mnaged the rough road between youth and adulthood, Old World tradition and America, and the novel effectively unfolds family tensions and Amar's swirling personal anguish."— Library Journal “The debut of 26-year-old Mirza is the first book from Sarah Jessica Parker's imprint at Hogarth; it explores the spiritual lives of its characters with sympathy and passion. The title of the book echoes a song from West Side Story, itself a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Here the warring forces are not two families but one, split by the tension between reverence and rebellion. The author's passion for her subject shines like the moon in the night sky, a recurrent image in this ardent and powerful novel.”  — Kirkus“Mirza displays a particular talent for rendering her characters’ innermost emotional lives, signaling a writer to watch.”— Publishers Weekly"A Place for Us is a triumph and an inspiration. I wish everyone would read this novel. A chronicle of the shattered expectations and irreconcilable desires within an American-Muslim family, A Place for Us hums with a deep faith in an unknown future, reminding its readers that when we are lost, love gives us a map home.”— KAREN RUSSELL, author of Swamplandia!“A Place for Us is a radiantly envisioned, beautifully achieved epic about nearly everything that matters: love, family, faith, freedom, betrayal, contrition, absolution. Fatima Farheen Mirza is a magnificent new voice." — ANTHONY MARRA, author of A Constellation of Vital Phenomena “This powerful, intricate debut is essential reading.” — NOVIOLET BULAWAYO, author of We Need New Names“This extraordinary, piercingly wise novel examines as profoundly as any book I know the threads of injury and grace that stitch together a family. Fatima Farheen Mirza has the passionate intelligence and moral vision that announce not merely an excellent writer, but a great one. I felt such gratitude reading this fiercely compassionate debut, and such joy at discovering a voice I will follow for the rest of my life.” — GARTH GREENWELL, author of What Belongs to You"The depth of the storytelling and the beauty of the language makes this debut novel by Fatima Farheen Mirza something to treasure. Highly recommended!"— JOHN BOYNE, author of A Ladder to the Sky“Fatima Farheen Mirza’s A Place for Us is a radiant debut. It accretes its power, beauty, and insight through its tender witnessing of private and family life. With her deeply compassionate view, Mirza dignifies terrain often desecrated by contemporary culture: maternity, faith, the bonds of community, the yearning for goodness, and our duty to others.  She shows us the destructiveness of our doubt in those we love, and the mercy of forgiveness.  Most wondrously, with this felt and moving novel, Mirza creates a place in which rebellion and reverence seem to embrace.” — CHARMAINE CRAIG, author of Miss Burma    “Fatima Farheen Mirza’s A Place for Us is a work of extraordinary and enthralling beauty. It is so deeply imagined, so intimately attentive to and solicitous of the lives it follows, so artful in describing the inseparable human experiences of pride and resentment, humility and loyalty -- and, most of all, love – that it feels not as if we are reading a novel about this Muslim-American family struggling with tradition and culture, but as if we become actual members of the family. It is that immersive, that brilliant, that true.”— PAUL HARDING, author of Tinkers"Beautiful, intimate, tender. So vividly told the characters live and breathe." — RACHEL JOYCE, author of The Music Shop FATIMA FARHEEN MIRZA was born in 1991 and raised in California. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and a recipient of the Michener-Copernicus Fellowship.

"A Place for Us is a book for our times." — CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR

The first novel from Sarah Jessica Parker’s new imprint, SJP for Hogarth, A Place for Us is a deeply moving and resonant story of love, identity, and belonging

As an Indian wedding gathers a family back together, parents Rafiq and Layla must reckon with the choices their children have made. There is Hadia: their headstrong, eldest daughter, whose marriage is a match of love and not tradition. Huda, the middle child, determined to follow in her sister’s footsteps. And lastly, their estranged son, Amar, who returns to the family fold for the first time in three years to take his place as brother of the bride. What secrets and betrayals have caused this close-knit family to fracture? Can Amar find his way back to the people who know and love him best?

A Place for Us takes us back to the beginning of this family’s life: from the bonds that bring them together, to the differences that pull them apart. All the joy and struggle of family life is here, from Rafiq and Layla’s own arrival in America from India, to the years in which their children—each in their own way—tread between two cultures, seeking to find their place in the world, as well as a path home.

A Place for Us is a book for our times: an astonishingly tender-hearted novel of identity and belonging, and a resonant portrait of what it means to be an American family today. It announces Fatima Farheen Mirza as a major new literary talent.

A Place For Us: Guaranteed a Place As One of the Best Books I Read This Year I absolutely loved this book which focuses on an Indian American family who have come to the United States and are now making their home in California. The story opens at Hadia's wedding where her brother Amar has come to reconcile with the family after having left home several years earlier. From that point, the book moves back and forth in time as bits and pieces of this family's story is revealed. We see Layla and Raffiq as a young couple, just starting out. We see the childhoods of Hadia and her younger sister Huda, and her younger brother, Amar. Different key events in their lives are shared, giving some background for the current state of their relationship now. This is a family saga that absolutely captured my attention from the very first page. I found each of the characters interesting and enjoyed how Mirza moved the story in time and perspective. I loved that although this is an immigrant story that is well done, it is also the story of more than just a family trying to assimilate in a new country and culture. Mirza's characters each have their own stories and flaws that are developed. I felt like this picture of a family is well done, that Mirza shows the good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly. The resolution of the story is also well done, although not tied up with a pretty bow, either.A Place For Us will very likely be one of the best books I read in 2018. I can't wait to see what else this author creates.no words of mine could possibly do justice to this breathtakingly beautiful story. I hesitate to pen this review because from where I sit, no words of mine could possibly do justice to this breathtakingly beautiful story...but I think to not contribute to the reviews that could encourage other readers to pick this up would be an even greater injustice to the author, who deserves every single word of praise and much more. While this is definitely a beautiful story, it is so unbelievably tragic that I think I'll be revisiting it for many days, and I will most definitely be reading it again...This book both broke my heart and made me smile throughout. Each character is so masterfully and intricately written that you feel as if you truly know them. You feel the love as it blooms in their hearts, their sadness and devastation as each strand of cord that ties them together is broken, their anxiety and inner conflict when they are keeping a secret, their regret and feelings of guilt that motivate them to do both everything and nothing to fix themselves and one another. Even Huda, who seems to be more of a minor character comes through with strength as the decades pass. I love the way that Fatima Farheen Mirza continues to give entirely different perspectives on the same events from each of the characters in the book. Hadia's great love for her entire family that is sometimes challenged for her desire for individual freedoms and equality. Layla's blind love for her son is counterbalanced for the jealousy she guiltily feels over her daughter's preference for Rafiq when they are young. Amar's desire for approval is diminished by what he feels is constant rejection from his community. What was most interesting to me was to recognize that Amar and Rafiq were mirror images of one another. Both wanted nothing more than love and acceptance from one another, but both were too prideful and afraid of rejection to allow themselves to actually pursue it. The saddest part about this story are the feelings they keep hidden in the dark recesses of their hearts and souls until it is too late. So many times throughout the book I found myself saying, JUST SAY IT! TELL THEM! But how like us all it is to keep these most important things tucked away, only to allow our anger and knee-jerk reactions dominate our relationships?Rafiq's narrative is the most heart-wrenching to read as a parent. I related so much to both Hadia and Amar because everyone has been the rebellious teenager who wishes they could just be accepted as they are. But as a parent, and understanding Rafiq's regret at the ripple effect his words and actions had not just in his own life, but in the life of his children left me speechless. How often do I say things to my children that hurt them because I think it is the right thing to say, when really I want to give them the love they are yearning for? The final piece of the story, in which Rafiq finally sets aside his pride and delivers a message to Amar via Abbas, is where I finally teared up and where we finally see Rafiq come full circle to his own desires to know his father as a boy.Beautiful story, beautiful prose and beautiful tragedy. This book is one that will live on for many, many years! One of the best books I have ever read! One of the best books Ever! I can't wait to see what this author writes next. This was one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It does not matter your religion. I am Catholic and I can say that I truly loved this book and reading about the Muslim faith. Ms Mirza has a beautiful way of writing . I would almost like to see a follow up book to see what is going on with Amar and the rest of the family. I really felt for the father. I would like to see him make things right with his son. As we all age everything comes into a more clear perspective and we realize that we need to give a little more, lighten up and enjoy life more. I will appreciate looking up at the night sky and my surroundings more now after reading this book. For a young woman in her twenties to write such a wonderful book while going to college is amazing to me. All I did in college was drink and study in that order. Bravo!!!

Author: Paul Tough
Published Date: 2019
Page: 400

“Indelible and extraordinary, a powerful reckoning with just how far we’ve allowed reality to drift from our ideals.” —Tara Westover, author of Educated: A Memoir, New York Times Book Review “Gorgeously reported. Vividly written. Utterly lucid. Paul Tough jumps skillfully between deeply engaging personal narratives and the bigger truths of higher education. The way he tells the stories of these students, it’s impossible not to care about them and get angry on their behalf.” —Ira Glass, host, This American Life “Paul Tough’s important new book on the broken promises of higher education begins with a chapter that he succeeds in making as suspenseful as the prologue of any serial-killer novel and as heart-rending as the climax of an epic romance . . . Among his book’s many vital contributions are its portraits of schools and programs that model a better way.” —Frank Bruni, New York Times “Paul Tough’s daring The Years That Matter Most forces us to unfold the suffering built into the creases of American higher education. It refuses to let us forget about the bodies and lives of real students. It should be necessary reading for every student, professor, administrator, and trustee in this country interested in what radical revision looks like.” —Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy: An American Memoir “Paul Tough is a beautiful reporter and writer and a deeply moral guide to understanding the situation of children in our heartless meritocracy. The Years That Matter Most is a great book that should start a necessary conversation about the high cost of the race to the top.” —George Packer, author of The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America and Our Man: Richard Holbrooke and the End of the American Century “Remarkable . . . [A] comprehensive, moving account of the inequalities that block many poor, minority, and first-generation students from realizing the benefits of a college education.” —Michael Nietzel, Forbes “All of the books by best-selling author Paul Tough have been meaningful . . . [The Years that Matters Most] arrives at the very moment when energized voters are pressing presidential hopefuls on how they would help all young people reach a middle-class life.” —Esther Cepeda, Chicago Tribune “[Tough] writes movingly about students who are trying to navigate the confounding, expensive, and intimidating process of getting into and staying in college.” —Wired “Paul Tough is a thinker to cherish: formidably clear-eyed, incandescently learned, and unshakably hopeful. Diving deep into the rewards, challenges, and perils of the American university system, The Years That Matter Most reveals the heavy price a society pays when it no longer pulls together to give its young people the education they need. An extraordinary, indispensable book.” —Junot Diaz, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao “Tough’s exploration does for college admissions what Michael Lewis’s Moneyball did for sabermetrics.” —Jessica Lahey, Air Mail “A deeply reported and damning portrait of fraying American social mobility . . . a clear-eyed portrait of what a stacked game it really is.” —Quartz “Drawing on broad reading and visits to campuses across the country, Tough’s work offers an indictment of American society and political structures and persuasively argues that universities must fulfill the American commitment to equality of opportunity.” —Library Journal, starred review “Tough clearly shows that college placement remains mostly about wealth at the expense of a collective educational environment. A good choice for aspiring college students and their parents.” —Kirkus Reviews  “In this fascinating study, education journalist Tough (How Children Succeed) argues persuasively that access to an elite college education, which in the U.S. is popularly believed to be a meritocratically distributed social equalizer, is in fact distributed in ways that reinforce existing economic divisions... His analyses of data are sound, his portraits of students and teachers sympathetic, his argument neatly structured, and his topic one with wide appeal. This well-written and persuasive book is likely to make a splash.” —Publishers Weekly  “Tough’s book explores the real and terrifying idea that what you do (or don’t do) between the ages of 18 and 22—or even 16 to 25—profoundly shapes the course of your life . . . moving and memorable.” —The Hechinger Report “A timely reassessment of the promise that higher education offers everyone the same opportunity to move up in the world . . . no big players escapes Tough’s critical eye.” —Rebecca Koenig, EdSurge PAUL TOUGH is the author of Helping Children Succeed and How Children Succeed, which spent more than a year on the New York Times hardcover and paperback bestseller lists and was translated into twenty-eight languages. He is also the author of Whatever It Takes: Geoffrey Canada’s Quest to Change Harlem and America. He is a contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine and a regular contributor to the public-radio program This American Life. “Indelible and extraordinary.”—Tara Westover, author of Educated: A Memoir, New York Times Book Review

The best-selling author of How Children Succeed returns with a powerful, mind-changing inquiry into higher education in the United States

Does college still work? Is the system designed just to protect the privileged and leave everyone else behind? Or can a college education today provide real opportunity to young Americans seeking to improve their station in life?

The Years That Matter Most tells the stories of students trying to find their way, with hope, joy, and frustration, through the application process and into college. Drawing on new research, the book reveals how the landscape of higher education has shifted in recent decades and exposes the hidden truths of how the system works and whom it works for. And it introduces us to the people who really make higher education go: admissions directors trying to balance the class and balance the budget, College Board officials scrambling to defend the SAT in the face of mounting evidence that it favors the wealthy, researchers working to unlock the mysteries of the college-student brain, and educators trying to transform potential dropouts into successful graduates.

With insight, humor, and passion, Paul Tough takes readers on a journey from Ivy League seminar rooms to community college welding shops, from giant public flagship universities to tiny experimental storefront colleges. Whether you are facing your own decision about college or simply care about the American promise of social mobility, The Years That Matter Most will change the way you think—not just about higher education, but about the nation itself.

Paul Tough Adds Another Remarkable Piece to His Body of Work It's rare to read a book about education, and feel like you can't put it down. This book is so powerful, and reflects the author's meticulous and thorough research approach that sheds light on one of the most important issues facing American society. You'll see how the pedigree of where you go to college really matters, especially for someone growing up in a low-income family. You'll read telling quotes from admissions officers as you understand the game they play -- reach a revenue goal, keep SAT scores high, allocate resources so you appear more selective and get more extended offers accepted. And, last on that list at many of our colleges, accept the gritty high-potential kid desperately trying to escape poverty. In one telling quote, an admissions officer explains the real challenge of the job isn't turning down kids they wish they could take, but taking (rich) kids they wish they could reject -- all to keep revenue up.Tough's at his best in explaining the machinations of the College Board and its SAT test. He lays bare the hypocrisy, and chronicles the many times the College Board has announced, with fanfare, findings that show the test isn't biased toward the affluent, or that 'tips and tricks' test prep isn't important, only to follow months, even years, of no substantiation, culminating -- finally -- in a buried report that their 'breakthrough research' is hollow at best, and deeply deceptive at worst. At one point, he likens their marketing to cover up the damage done to low-income, high-potential kids as along the lines of the tobacco companies. Wow!You'll follow a particularly successful SAT tutor in Washington, DC, who charges $400 per hour!! He starts by explaining to his (always quite affluent) customers that the SAT is a joke, tests nothing of consequence, and it's important not to view your score as a reflection of anything important, other than its impact on the college admissions process. He helps kids learn how not to stress over it, and shows them those little shortcuts that increase their chances of answering a question right, without understanding anything fundamental. And you see that these high-priced tutors really move the test-score needle for their affluent client base, while free alternatives like Khan Academy's SAT test prep offerings are ineffective. And you get a real sense of how the College Board tooled Khan Academy into its marketing message of, "Hey, we're so committed to equity that we'll make sure all students have access to high-quality test prep," when in fact it's the $400 tutors who matter, not free online lectures. After reading this book, you'll have a much better understand of the significant gap between colleges and the College Board purporting to help level society's playing field, and the cold, hard reality of a college system that works almost entirely for the affluent. It's an eye-opening examination of what many in our country view as a path of opportunity, but which the data show is a highly effective means of locking in privilege to our nation's most affluent. The implications of this are, to be sure, profound. At the end, I found that pang of regret that no further chapters await me, for now. But I would love for the author to consider a few other issues in his next work. The Years That Matter Most doesn't address how much our students are really learning in school, and whether our schools really do prepare our kids for success, or just rank them on hollow exercises. There's a telling chapter about the role calculus plays in 'weeding out kids,' and a quasi-inspiring story about a program at the University of Texas to help entering students (especially those who didn't have a background in calculus from their high school). Left unaddressed is that fact that even our science and engineering professionals don't do integrals by hand anymore -- it's all done computationally. Left unaddressed is how many majors (e.g., business, biology) nonsensically require calculus as a prerequisite. Or how when students take calculus, they generally miss out on statistics -- something that opens career doors, and is invaluable for citizenship and many personal decisions. But there's only so much that can be covered in one book.Make no mistake, Paul Tough's latest book is yet another vital contribution to our understanding of the world of education, and how is helps, and impairs, life prospects for millions. Read this. And if you know someone who works in college admissions, send them a copy!!A Crucial Contribution To the College Conversation Paul Tough has done it again.Just as Michael Lewis has a knack for explaining complex topics through relatable story lines, Tough has tackled a complex and inter-related journey of college access and completion and made the nuances and constraints accessible for the reader. While plenty of books tackle specific issues (debt, admissions, post-traditional students, standardized tests) Tough brings them together in a building narrative, and then reinforces their importance with a focus on the students who live the struggles and consequences of a system increasingly ill-equipped to serve those who would benefit most from a degree. If you've wondered if a degree still matters, why you can't work your way through college anymore, or how the very structures that once (largely through the GI Bill) expanded social mobility now perpetuate inequity, then this book is for you. Read, reflect, then find someone you know to walk alongside as they navigate their way towards a degree.A riveting read you will then want to discuss with others! This book manages to depict the human side of higher education while helping to dissect and decode the unfairness many of us sense but don't fully understand. It's the best sort of literary journalism, written with heart and diligence and deeply relevant to our times. I read it as a parent of high school age children and was fascinated by what I learned about college admissions, how the SATs are used and misused, and the deeper questions of equality in American education. Paul Tough paints compelling portraits of people in all parts of the system--from both low income and affluent students trying to figure out how to advance themselves via college to well-intentioned 'enrollment managers' who work for elite schools to highly paid SAT coaches, caring educators and administrators, and education philanthropists who for better or worse are funding the wrong sort of research. An excellent read. I can't stop talking about it and am eager for others to read it.

Balloon Juice I finally decided to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had purchased it some time ago and recently determined that now was the time to read this self-help classic. What a COLOSSAL disappointment! I am amazed that this mediocrity is so popular. I found it to be little more than 1980s managerial balloon juice. From “paradigm shift,” to “think Win/Win,” to (ugh) “synergy,” there is no empty self-help cliché left unturned. I should have stopped reading the first time I saw the word “synergy.” (I get countless “business proposals” in my email every day and, if I bother to skim any of them at all, I delete them as soon as the word “synergy” makes an appearance.) No word represents the trite emptiness of this book better than “synergy” – except maybe the verb form of the word: “synergize,” or the adjective “synergistic,” or the adverb “synergistically.” But they are all here. (The author also repeatedly refers to “things that are learned” as “learnings.”)The book doesn’t even try to live up to its title. There is no argument at all to support the idea that these are seven actual habits that real people have used anywhere in the world to achieve real success. In fact, these seven so-called habits appear to be nothing more than seven things that the author thinks are really good ideas, with weird examples of how they helped him deal with his kid being bad at baseball and also helped his kid learn the value of cleaning up the yard. The book’s title doesn’t match the book itself, but then no one would spend their money on a book called, “The Seven Things Some Random Guy Thinks are Really Nifty-Keen.”Here’s some useful self-help/time management advice for you: do not waste your precious time with this book. There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of better self-help books out there. Synergize your win/win paradigm shifts with some of those.Absolutely phenomenal I rarely if ever leave reviews on purchases, but I felt the need to share this one. I've spent the past several years trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when it came to happiness. I had every reason to be happy, but yet felt this deep hollowness inside. I've tried all the positive thinking quick fixes, meditation, law of attraction, etc. Nothing seemed to click or "cure" this aching inside. It wasn't until I read the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, that the fog finally lifted. This book taught me why all those quick fixes don't work and how my happiness depended on my own internal work and efforts. I encourage anyone who is struggle with a similar situation or everyone for that matter to read this book. It'll change your perspective on life!

Permission to Feel Download

ISBN: B07THD9LRV
Title: Permission to Feel Pdf Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive

This program is read by the author.

The mental wellbeing of our children is shockingly poor. Marc Brackett, author of Permission to Feel, knows why. And he knows what we can do.

"We have a crisis on our hands, and its victims are our children."

Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University's Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an "emotion scientist", he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults - a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel. He was the first adult who managed to see Marc, listen to him, and recognize the suffering, bullying, and abuse he'd endured. And that was the beginning of Marc's awareness that what he was going through was temporary. He wasn't alone, he wasn't stuck on a timeline, and he wasn't "wrong" to feel scared, isolated, and angry. Now, best of all, he could do something about it.

In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it. RULER has been proven to reduce stress, depression, and burnout and enhance to encourage higher academic achievement. This book is the culmination of Marc's development of RULER and his way to share the strategies and skills with listeners around the world. It is tested, and it works.

This audiobook combines rigor, science, passion, and inspiration in equal parts. Too many children and adults are suffering; they are ashamed of their feelings and emotionally unskilled, but they don't have to be. Marc Brackett's life mission is to reverse this course, and this audiobook can show you how.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

I wish I read this book 25 years ago! Permission To Feel provided me with a deeper understanding of why feelings matter, but more importantly, what I can do with my feelings. I didn't know there were actual skills to build awareness, a rich language, and real strategies to help me regulate emotions better. I'm excited to apply everything in this book to my home and work life!A relatable book on emotional intelligence Many books about feelings come across as mushy, but that's not the case with this one. This one is about emotional intelligence, and it's based on fifty years of research. It contains classroom and workplace stories, which make it more relatable. The book shares details on how society is impacted by things such as stressful and joyful events. We can change some things just by paying attention to our emotions. The book is designed to help readers understand how they feel, as well as their triggers, and then how that can impact us on a daily basis. The book is written in a way that an average reader can follow it, as it's not full of medical lingo or complicated steps. People in management positions in various professions (from teachers to engineers to doctors) could benefit from reading this book.Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review. The Importance of Unlocking Emotions As a licensed psychotherapist, I am interested in books that might be of help in my practice, so I chose to read and review this advance copy. Seeing the title, I expected a self-help book on accessing feelings. I know that it is beneficial to become aware of and identify feelings, as otherwise feelings unacknowledged feelings can get in the way of other processes. But Dr. Brackett’s message goes much further, and the assistance he offers is much greater. Feelings, we learn, are a central component in all areas of our lives. And having established the importance of unlocking the power of our emotions, the author offers an evidence-based system for integrating social and emotional learning, utilizing a system with the acronym RULER: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion. This is an excellent book, offering important information for people of all ages and a clear system for putting the information into use. I certainly plan to integrate it into my clinical practice. My thanks to author, publisher, and NetGalley for furnishing an advance copy to read and review.
