4.5 stars
My grandson and I both read this book. He liked it a lot, I thought it was superb for a ten year old. He is a voracious reader, and is quite critical of some books. He knows what he likes and what is not going to interest him.
Peak Marcello and his mother are invited to Afghanistan to climb with an international peace climb group. Afghanistan would give me pause, but off they went. The premise is multiple climbers, 200 in all, climbing indifferent areas all over the world. This is a book filled with some violence and multiple stressors, I would suggest you know how much your child can handle. In Afghanistan there is a constant tension between tribes and areas, and several of the climbers are kidnapped. In this group is Peak’s mother, and Peak is determined to find and rescue her.
I particularly liked the parts of the book that described climbing. I have always had an interest in Everest and the high mountains in Asia. I have followed and read the stories of the mountain climbers, and in particular the seasons when difficulties arise. This was all new to my grandson, and he liked the storyline and the climbing. Peak and his counterparts who were searching for his mother with him, filled the book with tension. Peak is an interesting character, and my grandson would like to read the author’s first book, and others to follow. My grandson looked up Afghanistan on his globe. and then read a little bit about its history. The book also included Afghan history, and it was a good tool for educating children.

Sometimes Young Adult doesn’t mean much more than that the hero is young –in this case, fifteen. As to the story, it can be as straightforward as an adult thriller. Certainly, this one is. It’s the second YA novel by novelist Smith about a young climber, Peak Marcello, fifteen years old now and the of world famous climbers, although mother and father are no longer a thing. In Peak, he helped scale Everest, handing over his chance to fame as the youngest cilmber to scale that mountain to his sherpa’s grandson Siun-jo. This time, climbing as part of the International Peace Ascent, two hundred youths from all over the world, simultaneously scaling the most formidable mountains in the world. Peak, and his mother, who’s eager to climb again, are in Afghanistan. Peak’s representing the United States and the whole extravaganza is going to be aired on television on Christmas day. Except that things go wrong, seriously wrong. There’s a kidnapping, dead bodies, and the next thing you know, Peak and his ally Ethan, an ex-military type possessed of an intriguing bag of skills, are tracking the kidnappers across Afghani mountain ranges. They find them and deal with them, without recourse to impossible coincidence or unnatural abilities and in the end, all is well in this thriller that is terse, efficient and satisfying. Peak is an appealing hero and he never appears older than his age. But neither does he appear younger and think back on it, fifteen-year-olds can be chillingly competent when they need to be.
15-year-old Peak Marcello; his mom, Teri, a climber known as The Fly; Zopa, a Sherpa friend from his ascent of Mount Everest 6 months ago (in the 2007 novel below); 200 teenagers from around the world and a film crew are off to climb the Pamir mountains in war torn AFGHANISTAN – what are the folks who organized this trip thinking?
Afghani outlaws kill 3 members of Peak’s party, kidnap Peak’s mom, Zopa, and the read of peak’s party there is nothing left to do – Peak and ex-Marine and fellow climber, Ethan, go off to rescue them. It will be an amazing feat of accomplishment because the killers have better weapons, better communications and know the territory, I won’t even bring up the perils of being tracked by a snow leopard.
I was rolling my eyes, our 14 year old was loving it – lol!
BOOK 1 "PEAK" After 14 year old Peak Marcello is arrested for scaling a New York City skyscraper, he’s left with two choices: wither away in Juvenile Detention or go live with his long-lost father, who runs a climbing company in Thailand. But Peak quickly learns that his father’s renewed interest in him has strings attached. Big strings. As owner of Peak Expeditions, he wants his son to be the youngest person to reach the Everest summit–and his motives are selfish at best. Even so, for a climbing addict like Peak, tackling Everest is the challenge of a lifetime. But it’s also one that could cost him his life. Roland Smith has created an action-packed adventure about friendship, sacrifice, family, and the drive to take on Everest, despite the incredible risk. The story of Peak’s dangerous ascent—told in his own words—is suspenseful, immediate, and impossible to put down.
"The only thing you’ll find on the summit of Mount Everest is a divine view. The things that really matter lie far below". – Peak Marcello
